A Comparison between Three Pre
A Comparison between Three Pre-1900 Poems and How They Portray the Theme of Love Essay This exposition will investigate how three sonnets depict love in various manners. The principal sonnet is First Love and it was composed by John Clare. He had a poor foundation and subsequently had no expectation of wedding the girl of a rich man. He attempts to pass on this circumstance in this sonnet thus, love seems to be being an exceptionally baffling and practically disagreeable feeling. First Love has a normal rhyme plan of four rhyming couplets in every one of its three verses. Will I look at thee? is the subsequent sonnet to be examined and it is one of Shakespeares Sonnets. It depicts a positive side of affection, with a general topic of it being interminable. Shakespeare composed numerous pieces this way, all containing fourteen lines with ten syllables in each. The third sonnet is Ballad. There is an enormous differentiation between this sonnet and the past two referenced, as in it puts over a negative perspective on adoration. It shows that racing into a relationship that won't work can in the long run drive an individual towards self destruction. Anthem doesn't have a spirit creator, as it is a sonnet that has been passed on by overhearing people's conversations, starting with one age then onto the next, being unobtrusively changed as time advances. It is any longer than First Love and Shall I analyze thee?, as it has eleven verses, each containing two rhyming couplets. The initial two lines in First Love put things in place for the entire sonnet where it says, I neer was struck before that hour With affection so unexpected thus sweet The speaker is clearly dazed in surprise of the magnificence of the lady he has quite recently observed, so the feelings that he is feeling are serious. He proceeds to depict her face with the comparison of her face sprouting like a sweet bloom. Further on, his heart is said to have been taken away, which would suggest that the entirety of the affection and sentiments he would ever have towards somebody have been coordinated towards her. By then, nothing else matters and this lady is his spirit concern. Additional proof of the speaker being influenced in such a sensational way is demonstrated where it says that his legs would not leave, and his face turned pale as dangerous pale. This shows there was a solid physical impact because of seeing this lady, just as a passionate impact. The speaker presently asks himself an expository inquiry out of unadulterated dissatisfaction. When she looked, what might I be able to trouble? At the point when she took a gander at him, he couldn't do anything. This may, once more, infer that he was overwhelmed with her excellence and he was unable to do anything in any case, take a gander at her, yet then again, it could be alluding back to the point that he originates from a poor foundation. It would be incredible for a humble man to wed a young lady from a rich family. Because of this, he can't follow up on his sentiments, and on the off chance that he can not do that, what would he be able to do? After an apparently positive beginning to the sonnet, the subject of disappointment and even sadness are starting to sneak in. The second verse in this sonnet proceeds to depict significantly progressively physical strains that the speaker is experiencing. He is blinded by the lady. This could maybe be both a physical and enthusiastic impact. The world around the speaker additionally is by all accounts in a turn and everything is switched. He says that it Seemed 12 PM at noontime and furthermore that he was unable to see a solitary thing. I imagine that the creator has utilized clear symbolism very well in this center verse, since it truly puts over the exceptional and practically terrible side of affection. He shows that adoration isn't something that you can control, particularly on the off chance that you are as guiltless and powerless as the speaker in this sonnet is put across to be. Family Gods EssayThis sonnet without a doubt shows love as not being interminable. Contrasted with Shall I look at thee?, where it says that affection is unfading, Ballad shows that adoration can be a snare, and after that adoration blurs, there can be many negative outcomes of racing into that relationship. The second and third verses show how merciless this darling was. The creator utilizes correlations with show what he would do in various circumstances. Before he got the young lady pregnant he would consistently associate with her, yet when her cover puckered up with disgrace he never came. Once more, when times were simple, or when summer carried no feelings of dread to trepidation, he would consistently be there, yet when she required him the most, he would relinquish her. This truly demonstrates this shepherd up to be a reasonable climate sweetheart. The following two verses proceed to show the young ladies massive lament for getting herself into a circumstance. She utilizes the expression, I wish multiple times in eight lines which truly underlines her distress. She likewise asks herself, O when will green grass spread me? suggesting that she needs beyond words. The results of her activities have along these lines gotten unreasonably substantial for her to hold up under. Dissimilar to the bliss appeared in Shall I analyze thee?, profound distress and anguish are passed on in Ballad. The young lady presently proceeds to depict the man that has exploited her in more detail. He guaranteed her awesome things, just to conflict with his promise later on. He guaranteed beds as fine as silk however he left her needing a bed of mud. The difference among silk and earth are plainly clear which makes the examination exceptionally successful. This is additionally another referral to death, which shows exactly how far the young lady has been crashed into gloom. She discusses her sweetheart having a heart that appeared to be delicate however it was steel. This allegory of it being as hard as metal shows how cutthroat he might have been, and that he didn't generally adore her. He had the spirit motivation behind alluring her with no aims of remaining with her. Once more, the utilization of the heart is seen in next verse where it says that the shepherd has two hearts. This clearly focuses towards him taking hers. The young lady currently starts to truly ponder self destruction. She shivers to consider what kind of father the shepherd will be for her child. The young lady looks at her heart to metal, as she did her sweethearts heart to steel prior on. My heart would break however it is metal. Her heart has been solidified and she has been harmed so much that nothing can influence her any more. Now she begins to consider taking both the babys and her own life. She has been headed to the profundities of misery and the main way out for her is passing. All through the entire sonnet, pressure has been building, and in this last refrain, the sonnet arrives at its peak. Prior she had stated, My spirit with God, my body dirt, yet now, in the last line of the sonnet, she says, Our spirits with God, our bodies earth. Racing into a relationship with somebody she didn't generally cherish has left her examining self destruction for both herself and her infant. All in all, it very well may be seen that these three sonnets do depict love in various manners. There are numerous beautiful gadgets and words that the creators have utilized in their depiction of affection. Some depict love as being interminable, while others show that it blurs after some time. Generally speaking at that point, a huge assortment of view of affection are appeared in these sonnets, which together give a striking image of adoration itself and the sentiments of those included.

Every one of the RFP sources have an arrangement of focal points and burdens. In any case, subsequent to breaking down every one of them cautiously, I reached the resolution that the first and subsequent choice together would be the best decision to use since we are doing this just because. This choice would at first be exorbitant however would diminish the costs later on. It would likewise be effective in light of the fact that it would permit us to dispose of sub-par merchants, which thus would encourage us in executing the fitting SCM programming. Moreover, it would diminish venture costs and formalize our issues and openings. With everything taken into account, after broad research and investigation, I would state this is the best choice for us to attempt. The Effect of Cultural and Historical Situations on...
Professor Brattoli â⬠American literature is almost always tied to historical and social events of the era in which it was written.â⬠There is a connection between literary works from different time periods. This connection is how history, current events and social events have impacted American Literature. Literary works and writing styles have been affected and influence by the world around us. This is seen in many of the works assigned for this class. In order to see how cultural and historical situations affect literature throughout history, it is important to get a brief history on each era discussed in this paper. The first era we will be reviewing will be writings fromâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is easy to see that current events and issues of the world around them have had an impact on authors and what they have written from the stories in this time period. The Native American authors wrote stories describing life during and after white man came to America. The African American authors wrote stories describing life during and after slavery. All of these are issues that these authors lived through and experienced through the world around them. Even the fiction in this time period showed connections with events going on in the world. America went through great changes between the years 1914 and 1945. World War 1 and World War 2 were both fought during this time period. Another event occurring in this time period is The Great Migration. This was the movement of African Americans out of the south and into the industrialized north. This event caused racial violence and strain between the northern whites and the southern African Americans. The roaring 20ââ¬â¢s brought out many social changes, experimentation, and freedom. Othello is Solely Responsible for his Downfall in...
I believe Iago has nothing to do with Othellos downfall as Othello is an easily mislead man who is easily influenced. Not only did Iago not directly say Desdemona was having an affair, he neither didnââ¬â¢t give proof to confirm the rumours. By Othello believing the lies, it surfaces his inability to trust and have faith in his own wife. Othello is written by William Shakespeare and was set in Cyprus and Venice during the 16th century. It is about a well-respected military soldier who due to lies and deceits killed his wife for no reason and after turned the knife towards himself. The play illustrates how much one could be polluted in such little time; with the ââ¬Ëfactsââ¬â¢ based upon suspicions and assumptions from a source who was determined toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦But we canââ¬â¢t make a final judgement as his true characteristics have not yet surfaced. Homelessness Melissa St George SOC 203: Social Problems Instructor: Risa Garelick August 28, 2011 I intend to show the meaning of homelessness and the different ways that people become homeless. I will also show how we can go about preventing homelessness. Homelessness means that one has no place to live. We will write a custom essay sample on Homelessness Melissa St or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"The most prominent sociodemographic characteristics identified with high risk of homelessness have been male gender, Black race, being unmarried, and being middle agedâ⬠(Greenberg Rosenheck, 2010, p1234-1235). Most of the homeless live in cities but there are those who live in the rural areas. Most of them are hidden because they are homeless for shorter periods of time. There are several causes or reasons why people are homeless, some of them are by choice and others are forced, contrary to most peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs that they ââ¬Å"are drug addicts, alcoholics or are mentally challengedâ⬠(syzygyastro). The different types of homeless people are ââ¬Å"push-outsâ⬠, victims of environmental catastrophe, mentally ill, the new poor, the technologically unqualified, the elderly, runaways, the demoralized, alcoholics, ease addicts, travel addicts, and excitement addicts (Henslin, 2008, p 228). The ââ¬Å"push-outsâ⬠are people or families that have been forced out. They can be teenagers who are thrown out by their parents. The parents may have thrown them out due to They can be adults or families who have been evicted by landlords. Due to the high costs of rents, they may have had to choose between paying the rent or other necessities such as food, clothing, or gas. Or they could have lost their home due to the ââ¬Å"sub-prime mortgage catastrophe that has made more than families homeless in 2008 and now threatens a further 48 percent of the rest sub-prime mortgage holders who are late in payments or in defaultâ⬠(Syzygyastro). Victims of environmental catastrophe have been forced out due to hurricanes, floods, fires, tornadoes, tsunamis, or other environmental disasters. The mentally ill have been forced out by hospitals or insurance companies. They are unable to care for themselves, so they live out on the streets not knowing how to survive in the ââ¬Å"realâ⬠world. They can also become homeless because they need to choose their medications over rent. ââ¬Å"20% to 50% of homeless adults suffer from a serious mental illnessâ⬠(Greenberg Rosenheck, 2010, p 1235). The new poor are forced out from a job due to technological change. There jobs are taken over by machines and/or globalization. The company moves to another part of the world, so that they can pay fewer wage to their employees. The technologically unqualified have been forced out because they never posed any technological skills, so they are unable to keep or get jobs. The wages that they do receive are so low that they can not afford an apartment. The elderly have been discarded. They have no family support, no income, and most are unemployable. Runaways choose to be homeless due to unstable living conditions. Most of these runaways are teenagers who have been physically abused. Some are the results of the system failing them. Most of the runaways are between the age of fifteen and seventeen but there are some that are as young as age ten. The demoralized are the depressed who have given up. The addicts are those who have been addicted to alcohol or drugs and choose their addictions over their homes. 0% to 80% have a history of substance use disordersâ⬠(Greenberg Rosenheck, 2010, p 1235), ââ¬Å"thirty eight percent of homeless people have a problem with alcohol addiction and that another twenty six percent of homeless people have addictions to other drugsâ⬠(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2003). The Anti-Drug Abuse Act has made impossible for people who are convicted of a drug-related crime to keep their public housing . In the 1950ââ¬â¢s the deinstitutionalization of psychiatric treatment was the major factor of homelessness. The ease addicts choose homelessness. They are usually in their early twenties and want to escape responsibility. The travel addicts choose to be homeless and want to roam. The excitement addicts choose to be homeless. They enjoy the thrill of danger and because it offers the ââ¬Å"edgeâ⬠. The other things that are also associated with homelessness are past incarceration, exposure to trauma, lack of low-income housing, and the decrease in public funds. ââ¬Å"As a result of loss of benefits, low wages, and unstable employment, many families leaving welfare struggle to get medical care, food, and housingâ⬠(National Coalition for the Homeless, 2009). A lack of affordable housing and the limited scale of housing assistance programs have contributed to the current housing crisis and to homelessnessâ⬠(National Coalition for the Homeless, 2009). There are many ways that we can help to prevent homelessness. In 1987, the McKinney Homeless Act took the first steps to this by making it a federal law that there ne eded to be funding for the homeless. The next steps that we need to do is to evaluate the homeless in our communities to see what programs or services are most in need. We need to evaluate our homeless shelters. We need to have job training and financial programs. We need to keep track of the people that we help. We need to set up supportive housing and/or ââ¬Å"Unfortunately, government action and public policy of recent has not necessarily helped the plight of the homeless, in fact in some cases it has served to compound the problemâ⬠(Gaddis, 2007). When we evaluate the homeless in our communities to see what programs or services that we need most, we need to do it in a way that is nonthreatening and compassionate. We need to evaluate our own bias, so that we can put them aside and help them. Many of the people that experience homelessness are not the stereotypical homeless persons that would come to mind when thinking about this problemâ⬠(Gaddis, 2007). We need to find out why they are homeless and look to the local government for help. Public assistance programs can help the homeless with some of their problems. There needs to be some type of coordination between homeless sh elters and public service agencies. Some people will not go to public agencies for help because of the bias of others and/or because of their pride. Many of the reports that I read told of conditions at shelters as being in poor condition. An example of this is when FEMA set up the social housing after Hurricane Katrina. ââ¬Å"Some people are highly critical of these camps, calling them nothing more than concentration camps complete with barbed wire and gun towersâ⬠(Syzygyastro). The other reports that I read talked about shelters that were run down, very few of them, and they were riddled with disease, pests, and thefts. Job trainings and financial programs will be able to help the homeless get back on their feet. We should have some kind of job training programs for these people because most of them are there due to a job loss. This would also help the runaways who need to the life skills to survive in the world. Financial programs could be very helpful because it can help them get their finances in order and to teach them how to stretch their earnings by budgeting. We need to keep track of the people that we help. Too many times people get the help that they need and then they are forgotten about. We need to set up programs that help this people and offer support over a long period of time. Studies of placement programs often find that they lose track of residents within the first year, so track clients carefully, and assess their need for specific servicesâ⬠(Solutions for America). We need to look at supportive housing or ââ¬Å"Treatment of substance abuse has been reported to improve outcomes in homeless persons with dual diagnoses of serious mental illness and substance abuseâ⬠(Folsom, Hawthorne, Lindamer.. , 2005). When we set up supportive housing for addicts, we can help them to beat their addictions and set up their new ââ¬Å"lifeâ⬠. We can also help the people with mental health disorders; get the supports that they may need. We will only be able break the cycle by coming together as a community and working on ways to help those that are having a difficult time. We need to remember that one day that could be us and we would want someone there to help us. Annotated Bibliography: Why Are People Homeless?. (July 2009). The Music Never Stopped free essay sample
Father and son relationships are very complicated and many aspects are well documented in books, poems, and film. As the father of two young sons, four and two, I was deeply affected by the film ââ¬Å"The Music Never Stopped,â⬠directed by Jim Kohlberg. I had the privilege of viewing this film at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. This is the first film I have seen in my adult life that caused me to weep openly several times. I connected with the struggle of this father as he dealt with a devastating brain injury to his estranged son. The film covered three common themes in father and son relationships. Rebellion, guilt, and acceptance are woven throughout the film. Each theme reminded me, as the father of two boys, I will have to deal with all of these issues in the future. I hope I handle things better than the father, Henry Sawyer, did in the film. We will write a custom essay sample on The Music Never Stopped or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The film starts in the late sixties when the son, Gabriel Sawyer, attends a high school anti -war rally in which an American flag is burned. Henry Sawyer, a Korean War Veteran, is deeply insulted by this show of disrespect. He feels his son has embarrassed him with this show of rebellion against everything the father believes in. Instead of trying to understand his sonââ¬â¢s point of view and feelings on the matter, he lashes out at him causing a verbal and physical altercation. Henry cannot believe that his own son could be so different from himself, when in fact this is very common during the teenage years. His angry rejection drove his son to leave the home, never to return. I promised myself I would not let my pride come before my relationship with my own boys. The lesson I learned is that rebellion is a part of growing up and is not direct reflection of my parenting skills. Guilt ridden, twenty years later, Henry is contacted by a hospital and told his estranged son has suffered a brain injury leaving him gravely disabled. Henry is now faced with the task of getting to know his son again and dealing with his feelings of guilt. He feels he is at fault for the life his son led and also indirectly to blame for his injury. These feelings make it very difficult for him to try and care for his son because of the constant reminder. He feels now that he failed his son by forcing him from the home. If only he could have reacted in a different manner all those years ago this would have never happened. Even though my boys are young, I have feelings of guilt. I question how I react to situations. Was I too hard on them? As a parent I donââ¬â¢t think these feelings ever go away completely. I learned that you should never push your kids so hard they never come back. To help Gabriel recover Henry employs the help of a music therapist. Dr.Daley discovers that Gabriel cannot remember the last twenty years of his life unless he is listening to music he likes. Through music Gabriel and his father reconnect. His father learns to accept Gabriel for who he is by embracing his music, which is not what Henry normally listens to. Henry buys every album from the sixties and seventies he can find and listens to them day and night. He memorizes the words and uses them as a tool to jog Gabrielââ¬â¢s memory. Henry begins to enjoy the music his son likes and they bond over this.Once Henry accepts the music he begins to enjoy it himself and finds common ground with his son. Gabriel especially likes The Grateful Dead. The movie finishes with father and son attending a Grateful Dead concert together. Henry has longed for this shared experience for many years and it was a moment he would never forget. Accepting his sonââ¬â¢s individuality was the key to rebuilding his relationship and letting go of his guilt. In my family I hope to use shared experiences to keep my bond with my sons strong, while letting them develop as individuals. There are many pitfalls in father and son relationships. This film made me reflect on my relationship with my own father. He always met my behavior with a calm measured response that must have been very difficult. We always maintained a good relationship, which Henry could have as well if he remembered to put his sonââ¬â¢s needs before himself. I became so emotional during the film because of my desire to be the best father I can be. I hope I can be as patient with my sons as my father was with me. Free Essays on Cross Free Essays on Cross The cross, as a basic design motif, appears in the pottery, weaving, carving, and painting of many cultures. It may be simply decorative, or it may have symbolic meaning. The tau cross, for example, was a symbol of life to the ancient Egyptians; when combined with the circle (as in the crux ansata), it stood for eternity (see Egyptian Art and Architecture). For most ancient peoples the Greek cross was a metaphor for the four indestructible elements of creation (air, earth, fire, and water), thus symbolizing permanence. The swastika, with the ends of its cross bars bent to the right, was common in both the Old World and the New World. It originally represented the revolving sun, fire, or life and later, by extension, good luck. To Buddhists, a swastika represented resignation; to the Jains, it symbolized their seventh saint. To Hindus, a swastika with arms bent to the left symbolized night, magic, and the destructive goddess Kali. In mid-20th-century Germany, the right-facing swastika was the Nazi party emblem (see Buddhism; Jainism; Hinduism; National Socialism). Understanding PTSD Flashbacks
Understanding PTSD Flashbacks A flashback is an intrusive, unintentional, vivid memory of a traumatic event. Flashbacks are one symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Defining PTSD Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in the aftermath of a traumatic event, including military conflict,à assault, interpersonal violence, a car accident, or a natural disaster.à PTSD can also occur among first responders,à as well asà people whose loved one experienced a traumatic event. To be diagnosed with PTSD, an individual must experience symptoms in the following four categoriesà for at least a month after the trauma: Re-experiencing the event. People suffering fromà PTSD often re-experience the event in unwanted, unintentional ways, including flashbacks and nightmares.à Avoidance of the event. Someone who is experiencing PTSD will oftenà try to avoid reminders of the event.Negative thoughts or emotions. The person may experience negative emotions (or a lack of positive emotions), feel self-blame, or lose interest in activities they previously enjoyed.Hypervigilance.à PTSD patients typically feel as thought they are constantly on ââ¬Å"high alert.â⬠They may have trouble sleeping, be irritable, or become easily startled, for example. While many people may develop some of these symptoms immediately after a traumatic event, not everyone who experiences a trauma develops PTSD. What a PTSD Flashback Feels Like Flashbacks canà be incrediblyà vividà and involveà re-experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells that were present during the traumatic event. Some people become flooded with the emotions that they felt at the time of the trauma.à Flashbacks can be so overwhelming and immersive that the person experiencing the flashback may temporarily feel that they have physically returned to the moment of the traumatic event. In some cases, a person experiencing a flashback may behave as though they were back in the traumatic event. Flashbacks can occur as a result of aà trigger- that is, when they notice something in the environment that reminds them ofà the traumatic event. However, people can also experience a flashback without being aware of a particular trigger that caused it. Flashbacks vs. Memories Flashbacks occur when individuals involuntarily re-experience a memory of aà traumatic event. Importantly, the psychological definition of a flashbackà differs from the common colloquial use of the term. A flashback isà notà simply a ââ¬Å"bad memory. Rather, it is an experience in which an individual actually feels as if theyà are re-living parts of the traumatic event. Flashbacks in PTSD are different from intentional memories because they occur without the person trying to do anything to bring back the memory. In fact, psychologist Matthew Whalley and his colleagues have found that patterns of brain activation are different when people are exposed to words that they associate with flashbacks, compared to words that they associate with non-flashback memories. Studies on PTSD Flashbacksà Psychologists have investigated whether it is possible to prevent the development of flashbacks after a traumatic event. Researcher Emily Holmes and her colleagues have suggested that, since flashbacks are often powerful visual images, it may be possible to reduce the severity by distracting the visual system. To test this idea out, Holmes and her colleagues conducted an experiment in which participants watched a potentially traumatizing video.à Afterwards, some participants played Tetris, and others did not. The researchers found that participants who played Tetris only had about half as many flashbacks as the participants who didnââ¬â¢t. In other words, it appears that a neutral activity such as Tetris kept the visual systems in the participants brains occupied, making flashback images less likely to occur. In another paperà by Dr. Holmesââ¬â¢Ã team, researchers asked emergency room patients who had experienced a traumatic event to participate in a similar study. Some participants played Tetris while others did not, and the researchers found that participants who played Tetris had fewer intrusive memories of their traumatic event over the next week. More broadly, researchers have found that psychotherapy and medication can reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms, including flashbacks. One type of therapy,à Prolonged Exposure,à involves discussing the traumatic event in a safe, therapeutic setting. Another therapeutic technique,à Cognitive Processing Therapy, involves working with a therapist to change ones beliefs about the traumatic event. Researchers have found that both types of therapy are able to lessen the severity of PTSD symptoms. PTSD Flashbacks Key Takeaways Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that can occur in the aftermath of a traumatic event.Flashbacks are a PTSD symptom that involve re-experiencing memories of the traumatic event.PTSD flashbacks can be extremelyà vivid and may makeà individuals feel as though they are re-living the traumatic event.à Several treatments are currently available for PTSD, and new research is investigating whether PTSD flashbacks can be prevented. Can Machines Know Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Can Machines Know - Essay Example There are also several ways of citing what makes up knowledge, some of them are more or less ââ¬Å"internalistâ⬠and some are also ââ¬Å"externalist.â⬠I would like to follow the internalist point of view which says that knowledge is a justified belief that requires the believer to be aware of the cognitive process of the given belief. If this is the case, internalism, then, requires consciousness in the justification of a belief. So if we ask whether a machine can achieve consciousness, for me, the answer is no. There are several notions in explaining the criteria of consciousness. For example, functionalism theory states that consciousness comes about when all the parts are put together in the right sort of a whole. However, I would like to believe that personal experience or ability to experience is important in determining consciousness along with the ability to think and interpret. To experience ââ¬Å"experiencingâ⬠one needs the skill of perception and intelligence. While one may argue that a computer with sensors could function in this manner, the concept of human independence, feelings and ethics or moral capacity is missing in the whole process.
